This programme was created based on the experiences of several women who practiced GYROTONIC® in NYC during both their treatment of and recovery from breast cancer. From these experiences the Authorised Master Trainer, Leda Franklin, created and systemized some basic exercises from the GYROTONIC® method so as to adapt them to the different stages of the disease as well as the different stages of recovery.
From the methodology and general benefits of practicing GYROTONIC® one can see that it is a method that can be beneficial to women who have suffered from breast cancer.
Muscle weakness
• Work the whole body and spine, using the latter as the main axis to strengthen the rest of the body.
Adhesions, lack of flexibility, tightness, irritation and dryness in the scar and the area surrounding the shoulder
• We treat the scar through gentle stretching and both active and passive mobilization of the area.
• We gently stretch the torso by breathing.
Breast, arm and shoulder pain
• We begin to move these areas as soon as possible in order to avoid encystment of joints and treat against the symptoms of ‘frozen shoulder’.
• Recover of full respiratory function.
Lymphoedema
• In this case we never lift weight, but occasionally weights are used to alleviate the force of gravity thus allowing the arm to be suspended.
• Contraction of one’s own muscles helps to drain the lymphatic system.
Changes in posture, hormonal imbalances and weight changes
• Through guidelines for active relocation and stretching we analyse the posture and affected area and provide advice for their application in the day-to-day life of the patient.
• Gentle exercise to help to activate the cardiovascular system.
• We work with legs in suspension to decrease liquid retention which cause hormonal treatments.
• Muscle strengthening to prevent premature osteoporosis due to hormonal changes.
Psychological damage
• After having been hospitalized it’s important that the woman begins to do things for herself. The act of being active is in itself beneficial.
• Improving corporal senses, mobility and agility. The improvement of personal image allows the person to feel better with themself.
• Working on coordination and concentration both of which are very important during chemotherapy.
